"The Regular Joes" are an 11 piece Swing and Jive band based on the South Coast of England specializing in the dance music of that jumpin', jivin' era in-between the Big Bands and Rock 'n' Roll.
Their repertoire is a blend of old-school R&B, Jump Blues, and Classic Swing, combining the music of legends like Louis Prima, Louis Jordan, Joe Williams, and Frank Sinatra, with the songs of contemporary swing 'revival' bands such as Indigo Swing, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Lavay Smith.
The band was formed by Baritone saxophonist and swing dancer Martin Chilvers, who having experienced some of the best swing bands in the world first hand through his love for dancing, had always wanted to start his own swing band that itself was aimed at dancers.
The stars aligned in 2008 and he brought together a down to earth group of Guys and Gals from all walks of life, varying in background and age, but with one thing in common; a love of swinging music!
The name of the band was inspired by a song recorded by The influential San Francisco based “Indigo Swing”. The song “Regular Joe” seems to sum up the band’s ethos and they play it at almost every gig, “It suits us to a T” explains male vocalist Howard. In fact he Joes were contacted by a former guitarist of the now defunct group who happened across their website. “It was great, its like we had been given a seal of approval, and at the same time it was probably quite surreal for him to see how one of their past recordings had helped inspire a whole new swing band.” adds bandleader Martin.
But don’t let the name fool you, The Joes are no ordinary “Black And White” swing band. Fronted by young crooner Howard Mitchell and the delectable songstress Miss Annie, The Joes have a unique onstage presence that faithfully captures the flair and style of a bygone age yet colourfully bring it into the current day with fresh toe tapping, finger popping tunes. As well as great musicianship and a sense of humour!
The Regular Joes have created quite a buzz in their home town of Bournemouth by promoting their own “Jump Jive and Jitterbug” monthly dance gigs to great success, and in 2011 they will be stepping up and performing at some of the best gigs on the national Vintage music scene like “The Big Jive” all-day event and the “Hepcat Holiday Summertime Swing” week-end.
